PERU SOUTH CIRCUIT
Prepare yourself to explore the highlights of Peruvian culture with the Southern Circuit Tour. Here you will set off on an adventure from Lima to the Nazca Lines and on to the "White City" of Arequipa by land. You will be witness to the changing Peruvian landscape and culinary staples of each region. Your trip continues to Lake Titicaca and the Uros floating reed islands and Taquile island. Finally you arrive in Cusco for the ultimate culmination to any trip; an unforgettable visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. With the Southern Circuit Tour you will get to visit the most recognizable landmarks of Peru while making the most out of your travel time.
ITINERARY, 9 DAYS / 8 NIGHTS
You arrive at the international airport in Lima, your guides will be awaiting you in the lobby to shuttle you to your hotel where you have the evening free or you can call it a day and get some rest after your long flight. Your guides will let you know at what time they will be picking you up the following morning.
In the early morning you are met by your guides at your hotel who will assist you in the transfer to the Cruz del Sur terminal to catch your bus to Nazca. Upon arrival in Nazca you will be met by your guide, who will show you around town.
Today a light breakfast is recommended as you are taken to the airport in Nazca for your flight over the Nazca lines. The flight lasts approximately 40 minutes and takes you over the most popular lines. After the flight you will also have a chance to visit the Chauchilla Cemetery, which houses the remains of an ancient burial ground from the Nazca people. You will see mummies in their tombs, many of them well preserved due to the dry climate. Afterwards you will visit some artisan workshops where they will show you how pottery in the area has been made for thousands of years and how they currently mine for precious minerals. The remainder of the evening you can spend in your hotel or exploring the small town of Nazca, your guide will be on hand to recommend restaurants and short activities. In the evening you catch your overnight Cruz del Sur luxury bus to Arequipa departing Nazca at 10:00 p.m. These buses are state of the art and super comfortable to give you a great night’s sleep, services include on board bathrooms, entertainment and meals.
You arrive in Arequipa in the morning and have the chance to rest a little more or explore the city before leaving for the City Tour in the early afternoon. During the City Tour you'll visit the Mirador de Yanahuara, a lookout spot where you can take pictures of the city with El Misti in the background. The Plaza of Paucarpata, a rural suburb with a pleasant country feel, el Molina de Sabandìa; a granary from 1785 that is built out of volcanic ash, La Plaza de Armas, Arequipa’s Main Square and El Monasterio de Santa Catalina, a huge beautiful brightly colored monastery still used by the nuns. After the tour you have the evening free to check out the nightlife or rest up for the following day.
Today you have the morning free to explore Arequipa’s center or go shopping for souvenirs. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the 4M bus terminal to catch your touristic bus to Puno (1:25 p.m). This journey will make several stops including Juliaca and the Lagoon Lagunillas where depending on the season you will be able to see Chilean Flamingos. Other stops include Rock Forest and the National Reserve of Salinas Aguada Blancas, where you will see vicuñas in their natural environment. Upon arrival in Puno you will be met by your guides who will transfer you to your hotel where you will have the evening free to acclimate to the high altitude or head out and explore the city center.
Today you embark on a full day tour of Lake Titicaca. You begin early in the morning (6:30 a.m) by being transferred to Puno's port. Here you will board your boat as you prepare to explore the lake. The first stop is the Uro Island made up entirely of totora reeds. Here you will experience everyday life on the islands and be given a demonstration on how the islands are built and their history. You will then depart the island by boat and head towards the island of Taquile.
In Taquile Island you will visit the Main Plaza as well as the market. There will also be a demonstration of customs during your lunch break. Taquile has approximatley 1,200 inhabitants, they have become known for their entrepreneurial spirit as well as their local handicrafts. After lunch you will have further time to explore the island and take pictures. At around 2:30 p.m. we leave Taquile and return to Puno, arriving at around 5:00 p.m. in the afternoon. You have the remainder of the evening to explore Puno.
You are picked up from your hotel in Puno at 7:00 a.m. and transported to the First Class Bus Terminal to catch your tourist bus to the Inca city of Cusco. During the trip you will visit many Archeological ruins on the way towards Cusco. Sites include pre-Incan Pukara, lunch in Sicuani, followed by Raqchi and the colonial church of Andahuaylillas, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes. You arrive in Cusco at 5:00 pm where you will be transferred to your hotel and you have the evening free to enjoy Cusco's nightlife. The Cusco Tourist ticket is included in your purchase so you will have the opportunity to visit many of the museums, temple of the sun and Sacsayhuaman , on your own in the evening.
You begin your trip to Machu Picchu this morning. Driving through the serene Sacred Valley of the Incas, you'll visit the ruins of Pisac as well as make a stop at a market for those that wish to purchase souvenirs. Your tour takes you to the town of Ollantaytambo, here you'll check out the massive ruins before catching the Expedition train to the tourist town of Aquas Calientes beneath the ruins of Machu Picchu, where you'll spend the night.
This morning you wake up early to board one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu. Once up at the ruins you'll catch a beautiful sunrise over the site, then given a tour of the ruins. Afterwards you have the option of climbing to the peak of Huayna Picchu or exploring the maze of ruins throughout the site. In the late afternoon you catch your return Expedition train back to Cusco for the night’s festivities.
Today your guides will pick you up from your hotel depending on your domestic flight schedule to Lima.
