PUERTO MALDONADO 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
Forest Viewing: Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the port on the Madre de Dios River. A 25-minute trip by the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe will take you through the final stretch to the Sandoval Lake Lodge. From here the trail leads to a path of 2 miles on the way, or you can buggy through the secondary forest, until you reach a small canal where you board the canoes and paddle 220 meters through a Mauritia palm, swamp forest As the canal opens on the shiny surface of the lake, we move slowly, rowing a catamaran to cross the lake to the lodge.
Puerto Maldonado: After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the heat of early afternoon, we board the catamaran, and explore the western end of the lake. Here in the flooded forest of palms we hear the sounds of hundreds of red-bellied Macaws as they return to the palm forest at night. In the evening, after dinner, we return to the canoe in search of the big, black and extremely rare Black Caimans. If there is clarity of the night light, we can also float in the middle of the lake and marvel at the brightness of the sky.
Lake Sandoval: A call to wake up before dawn allows us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake at the time of day. Many of the fish-hunting birds around the lake are active very early in the morning, and it will provide safe exit an excellent view and photos to see a prehistoric landscape.
Forest: Again at dawn, we eat a quick snack before boarding the catamarans to explore the west in hope of encountering the giant otters. Then after a late breakfast we explore some of the sections of the forest with our resident naturalist guide. As we walk through the woods, we are experiencing what our guide explains regarding the ecology of the forest and its diverse flora and fauna. Returning for lunch, there is an optional rest for those who want to escape the afternoon heat. For those who are full of energy, there is a separate option to explore some of the stretches of forest.
Tambopata Jungle: With the cool evening, we once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern side of the lake, and are sure to experience a spectacular sun set before returning for dinner. After dinner, we will have a final opportunity to appreciate the black caimans in the lake or go on a short hike through the forest before going to bed.
Transfer out: After breakfast we come to the end, taking a short trip around the west end of the lake in order to glimpse the Giant Otters before returning to Puerto Maldonado to reach the flight to Lima.
